It's live! WordPress 3.8, named “Parker” in honor of Charlie Parker, bebop innovator, is now available for download from the WordPress website or by clicking that big ol' update button within your WordPress Dashboard.
Once installed, you'll see the gorgeous, redesigned interface. The clean, fresh new look is modern and easy on the eyes. I'm sure you'll love the new look, just as much as I do! It uses the Open Sans typeface which provides simple, friendly text that is optimized for print, web, and mobile interfaces, and has excellent legibility characteristics.
The improved responsive interface makes editing your site a breeze, no matter whether you're on a desktop, tablet or mobile device. The newly redesigned vector-based icons scale to your screen, so not only do they look sharp, but you'll also find your pages load significantly faster also.
Prefer a splash of colour in the Dashboard? WordPress 3.8 includes eight new admin color schemes so you can pick the one that suits you best. The Themes page and the Widget page have both gotten some love as well, with newly designed layouts that make using the respective pages even easier than before.
Along with the redesigned interface, WordPress 3.8 also introduces a brand new default theme, Twenty Fourteen. Twenty Fourteen is a sleek new magazine-style theme. You can choose between a grid or a slider to display featured content on your homepage as well as providing you with three widget areas and multiple page templates.
If you want to get a first hand look at Twenty Fourteen, check out my screencast below where I give you a quick preview of this bold new theme, along with showing you some of its great features.
Last but not least, with all these new changes in the WordPress dashboard, keep an eye out for an updated Easy WP Guide. It's not quite ready to launch just yet, but it's well on the way, so give our Facebook page a ‘Like’ or follow @easywpguide on twitter for updates. If you're subscribed to our newsletter, then you'll be the first to know when you can download this completely revised edition.
As always, don't forget to make a backup of your site before upgrading, you know, just to be safe. I'd also love to hear what you think of the new Twenty Fourteen theme so leave a comment below with your thoughts.
Thanks for the overview–now I can fearlessly update WordPress!
Hi Diane, You’re very welcome. I’m glad you found it useful 🙂
Thanks for this. Great overview.
I just updated my site and I’m baffled …. previously I had full-width page options but those seem to be gone. Any tips you could offer on how to recreate those? I’m looking for help, not spamming … please un-link this if you’d like.
And thanks in advance.
There’s still a Full Width template in the default Twenty Fourteen theme. When you edit your page, just double check that it’s been selected in the Page Attributes panel in that right-hand sidebar of the edit page.
